I've had the lyrics of this favorite James Taylor song rolling in my mind over the past couple of days, so I thought I would share a couple of my insights/feelings about it. This song is such a great essay on life philosophy, all encapsulated into a 3 1/2 minute musical journey. I find it stirs me so much, even after so many years of hearing it. What a wonderful thing music is! The first thing that jumps out is the "try not to try too hard, it's just a lovely ride" part. We often get so caught up in striving & struggling that we forget to enjoy the ride. How often has that happened to you? I'm guilty, for sure.
And the "secret of love is in opening up your heart." Yes. That's when the magic truly happens -- our ability to connect with other humans having a spiritual experience is through our heart. The soft, vulnerable feelings we try to shield from danger and damage and sometimes end up closing off in the effort. But relax, take a breath, slow down and let your heart open up to this timeless truth. Thank you JT!!
